The M.Fredric Blog
As you may have just watched on tonight's episode of The Voice, Adam Levine's team came in to M.Fredric Studio City for a little lesson on style and individuality. Show's stylist, Ingrid & Adam's stylist, Matt Gold brought the final four girls to our store for some one-on-one style coaching.
Some of you may have already known this, but Adam Levine's family owns M.Fredric. Adam's dad: Fred Levine - Fred's wife: Lisa Levine & Adam's Aunt: Mardi Fox. In his earlier years (prior to Maroon 5 and The Voice), Adam dabbled in the apparel business by working for his dad in the M.Fredric Warehouse ticketing merchandise. His dad had a bird's nest view of the warehouse from his office, so he kept an eye on Adam. But as soon as Dad would leave the office, Adam would pull out his guitar and play for the warehouse staff; which they loved because he was way too slow of a worker! Luckily Adam's musical talent superseded his ticketing skills, and I think the entire world is thankful for it. But even as Adam grew more and more famous, he stuck by his family's side and supported all his dad's endeavors - never missing a grand opening of a new location or store event (unless he was on tour obviously).
Here's little Adam drumming away on the counter at one of our first stores:

So it's no surprise that Adam would bring Caroline, Amber, Judith & Sarah to M.Fredric for their fitting for the Live Show. We had a blast watching the beautiful ladies receive their transformations and embrace their individuality through style. And as a group...well you saw how incredible they looked!!!
Judith Hill rocked her look! Get her Bailey 44 Leather Tank to pair with your own bright colored pants.
Caroline Glaser looked stunning in her Hale Bob Sanctuary Cold Shoulder Top and Joe's Jeans Black Coated Skinnies
Amber Carrington was HOT, HOT, HOT in her Black Nico Super Skinnies by Hudson
And the lovely Sarah Simmons donned an Elan Black Halter Maxi Dress with a Long Fringe Beaded Necklace & Deerskin Feather Necklace by Ettika..
Best of Luck to ALL the contestants! But we're rooting for TEAM ADAM All the WAY!

WHAT? Pastels
WHY? Today is the first day of SPRING! Incorporating the pastel palette into your everyday look is a great way to add some color to your wardrobe for the new season. Designers such as Donna Karan, Oscar de la Renta, and Tory Burch are all showcasing this trend on the runway this season.
HOW? Although not much innonvation in this trend, your pastels will always look incredible with whites and florals. Use color blocking for a fashion foward
ensemble. And for the final touches, add some playful bangles or beaded bracelets to complete your runway look.

WHAT? Tie-Dye
WHY? It was about five decades ago when everyone first started wearing these bright and colorful patterns on items such as t-shirts, skirts, and pretty much anything! It became one of the most enjoyable and easy DIYs that one can do with friends or children, to turn their every day white shirt into a piece of art and wear it. Each pattern has its own unique design and can be mixed with any color, allowing for individuality, which is always in style!
HOW? Nowadays, not everyone has the free time to generate this pattern on their own, lucky for us, labels such as Free People and Hard Tail have created pieces with the old fashioned Tie-Dye print, only this time around, with a trendier fit. These colorful pieces can be mixed with like-colored or plain black and white pieces to add that pop of color and texture to their solid outfit.

Wildfox Couture, a trendy, vintage inspired LA based womens clothing brand, or what I refer to as heaven, recently launched its premier sunglasses collection for summer of 2012 and I have all the scoop about it! As you may already know, Wildfox has been around since 2007, inspiring fashion divas with its bright colors and patterns on what first started as knit wear, into a wider range of tops, bottoms, dresses, denim, and now sunglasses! The line, known to be classic with a influence of wildfoxs energy and palette, is sure to be like no other sunglass line youve seen before.
Wildfox collaborated with eyewear designer Benjamin Montoya to create this mix of oversized, 60s inspired, unique glasses that can fit anyones style. These sunglasses are perfect for the typical summer day out, a beach party, vacations, and pretty much anything that comes your way this summer. Lets not forget to mention, not only are these sunglasses handmade, but their lens come in different color options, such as grey, brown, rose, or the 60s inspired mirror coated. You can definitely dress up any outfit with these on.
The sunglasses collection is made up of a few different styles, each in different frame and lens color. The Classic Fox is the oversized frame sunglasses, which comes in four different colors, including the summer trending tortoise and matte black! This trendy oversized frame also comes with a multi colored mirrored, or pink/purple lens. Two other styles featured in the Wildfox summer collection is the Bel Air and Twiggy which have a more rounded, 60s inspired, frame that comes in black, white, and pink. If you are looking for rounded glasses in a metal frame instead of the acetate frame, the Startruck and Winona could each be the perfect fit!

A dear friend, and business associate, has been collecting vintage clothing for decades. After a ridiculous amount of years of collecting these wonderful treasures, he decided to let us in to his fabulous world. I don't think you can even begin to understand the sheer awe that was experienced when walking in to that warehouse for the first time. At that moment we knew that "vintage" was a division that M.Fredric had to get in to.
With so many designers pulling inspiration for current day clothing from past genres, we decided why not give our customers access to the 'real deal'. So we'd like to present to you M.FREDRIC VINTAGE! All pieces are hand selected to ensure we are getting the best of the best--every piece is unique beyond words. Our buyers have found everything from the roaring twenties to the days of disco. The array of history can only be showcased and fully understood by physically seeing the pieces. We're not just talking about 50's house dresses and 70's fringe leather...we have briefcases from the 40's, Levi's from the 80's, clutches from the 30's, hats from the 20's. The plethora is a "must see".
Words cannot do it justice, nor will the photos shown below. This is something that you must come and see for yourself. I guarantee that whether you are a lover of vintage clothing or characterize yourself as a modern day woman/man, you will find something to appreciate in the collection. It may spark a memory or excite you to the core, either way I can't imagine you won't find something to tickle your fancy.
Take a peak at just some of the displays and then be sure to come in a get the real experience.
Incredible red leather jacket with fur collar
Revere back to your flannel days (starting at just $19!)
Accessories to admire
Not just women's...we have a men's division too!
Awesome boots
So cool
Stunning dress from the 1920's
More treasures
Come in to M.Fredric Studio City to view the entire collection of VINTAGE clothing and accessories for women, men & kids. Yes, Kids! Oh my gosh, can we say "OshKosh B'Gosh"? So cute!
A few of our other locations have a sprinkle of "vintage" items, but if you're looking for the best selection, go to Studio City.

Camp Ronald McDonald For Good Times
In 2007, M. Fredric adopted Camp Ronald McDonald for Good Times. The charity is supported by vendors and patrons of Kids stores, which strives to replace the physical and emotional damage children experience as a result of cancer.
Camp Ronald McDonald for Good Times offers cost free medically supervised camp experiences where children with cancer and their families can shed the stress and routine of daily life. As a result of being at Camp, each camper develops a positive identity, independence and self-reliance, social competencies and feel a sense of support.
By collecting one dollar donations from our customers, vendors and employees, along with a portion matched by M.Fredric, we have raised close to $82,000 for Camp Ronald McDonald!
Just this week, we received some beautiful letters from the kids that we helped send to Camp. Please share these touching stories with those that you know. The childhood activities that these campers experience take away some of the physical and emotional damaged caused by cancer and replace it with hope, courage and motivation.
A big portion of the money collected has come from our customers. So these letters are for you too! It is because of your generosity and continued support over the years, that these wonderful children below got to have the experiences that they did.
Elijah; Age 8
Erick; Age 12
Faith; Age 8
If you wish to make a donation or learn more about Camp Ronald McDonald for Good Times please visit their web site www.campronaldmcdonald.org.
M.Fredric matches a portion of each dollar donated through our stores. If you live in Southern California and would like to come in to one our stores to make a donation please see our different locations. You may also call our offices to make a donation over the phone 818-597-0212.
With hope, courage, motivation and our support, kids who attend the 7-day sleep away camp will learn to be kids again!!!

My trip to India is worth at least 2 entrees. The first one will be about the people, the country and my experience. The second will be about how the trip touched M.Fredric.
First of all, the trip was amazing because of my hosts, Raj & Akash. They made it into an unforgettable trip of a lifetime. We went everywhere from upper class parties and restaurants to marketplaces where the poverty was in your face & eating street food that cost 2 dollars for 3 adults.
Getting the negative out of the way, I will say that in order to enjoy this country you must get past the poverty and filth. Once you rise above focusing on the trash in the streets, the pollution in the air and the children begging for food and money, you can see the colorful, spiritual, exciting people. People who are always smiling, dancing and laughing, even though they have nothing. The food and fashion is off the charts. The exotic beauty of these dark skinned, dark eyed men, women & children kept me in awe.
It truly is a country of contradictions. For example, every begging female wears gold jewelry??? Every night there are parties celebrating life, even though it is a tough life. The chaotic traffic in the streets are being navigated by a very spiritual person. The filth and poverty is surrounded by colorful fashion and potent smells of the Indian spices. It's like a different planet.
That being said, look at these photos and enjoy!
The Poverty.
The Delhi market place. Chaos!
The holy cow in the market place in Delhi - typical.
Picture of color in Delhi - A street band.
A Hindu alter at a friend's house.
Trash in the street.
The colors of Jaipur.
A Sadu in Goa.
The beautiful faces.
We ate everything in sight (of course Akash had to approve). The spices are so fresh the food takes on a flavor I've never tasted before.
$2 lunch for 3 people - Street Food
Street stand of veggies & spices
Every morning we stopped at the coconut cart and toasted to a glorious day with our fresh coconut juice.
After dinner we ate a snack called Paan - it was supposed to aid in digestion. PS. Nobody got sick - we felt great!
The Pink City. Beautiful textiles and palaces! Check out the view from our hotel room in Jaipur.
Dancing, singing & laughing at a festival.
Lots of R&R - Beach at Goa

A friend's home in Delhi.

A beautiful book to pick up is To India With Love From New York to Mumbai Musicians, fashion designers, actors, painters, photographers and more share their experience in India. I loved the book!

Elaina here! You haven't met me yet. I'm the Marketing Director at M.Fredric and I basically handle all the fun stuff like all those Facebook and Twitter updates, events, trend reports, studio services, celebrity shopping and your favorite...Promotions!
That's enough about me, what I want to share with you is the amazing experience last night at NBC's The Voice Wrap Party!!! As many of you know, Fred's son is Adam Levine of Maroon 5 and now The Voice, and last night was the season finale! Guess who won...TEAM ADAM!!! We are so proud of his artist Javier Colon. While the room filled with tears of utter joy, there was no stopping the insanity at last night's wrap party. It was as much to my surprise as everyone else when the entire cast (sans Xtina - I'm not quite sure what happened to her) got on stage and began a 2 hour jam sesh!
The event was so incredible there aren't even words to describe it. So instead, please enjoy a few pics I took from the stage. I apologize for the ones that aren't very crisp - I couldn't stop trembling with excitement the entire evening!
Blake Shelton with Dia Frampton & with Xenia who later on did an encore performance of Price Tag
Vicci Martinez with Cee Lo & Curtis Grimes.
Our main man...Javier Colon. You are THE VOICE! Singing Don't Stop Believing
The only thing I was bummed about was that him and Adam couldn't perform together! Unfortunately, Adam was the only one there that could play the drums, so he never got to get up and sing.
Here's me on the right with some fellow Voice fans
Oh Cee Lo...You amaze me so. Within his 30 minute set, Cee Lo gave a great performance of Van Halen's Jump and of course Forget You
The crowd. Insanity.
Adam Levine. Enough said.
Such a proud dad! I never saw Fred without a huge smile. And there's him and Lisa dancing the night away.
Some more Adam. And Nakia getting some memorable footage.
He just annihilated those drums. I lost track of how many drum sticks he broke.
Hope you enjoyed some of my pics. I'll be speaking to you soon. Signing out. -E

Don't think that I'm a pack-rat. I really only keep things that I think are classic or the first of their kind. So here are a few items of fashion throughout the years of 1980 and 2011. Since every piece is from M.Fredric, let's call it M.Fredric VINTAGE.
Our first dress line we ever carried: Ida Claire
1985: Denim Overalls w/paisley cotton "JAG" shirt
1989: Czechoslovakian glass jewelry
1990: Recycled button Levi's w/white leather star, heart & flower patches
1992: Recycled button fly Levi's w/suede chap legs
1998: Recycled button fly Levi's w/Mexican embroidered patches
2002: GRAIL jeans w/printed skulls
2010-2011: Pieces from my India trip (Nov 2010). Green leather fringe bag, turquoise and amber ring, lapis silver filigree ring, sequin shawl & gold bangles
So much fun going through the old goodies in the closet! We all hold on to things from the past, and if you don't, you might want to consider doing so. You know those people that say "it will come back in style"? Well they're probably right. Even now we're seeing these great fashion trends from the 70's dominating the market. Flares, maxi dresses, fringe and so on. So don't listen to that friend or spouse that is forcing you get rid of everything. Hang on to a few of your favorites. You'll be happy about it 20-30 years from now.

2011 TREND REPORT
WHAT? Bright & Bold Colors
WHY? Because as Cyndi says, true colors are beautiful like a rainbow. It's time to expand your palette and add some punchy pieces to your wardrobe! Jil Sander, Prada and Louis Vuitton all showed these technicolor hues on the runway and this bold trend is suitable for any age.
HOW? Start out with an accessory if you're too nervous to jump right in. A bright bangle or a hyper handbag. Then kick it up a notch and go for apparel. Best advice we can give is pair your haute hue with a solid neutral. You can never go wrong with a plain white tee. And if you're up for a real attention grabbing bonus, throw on a coat of a contrasting bright nail polish to complete your radiant ensemble.

Sunday was a perfect day for meditating in the garden. Although it's still early and the veggies aren't going crazy, we do see lots of basil, parsley, cilantro, mint, and oregano.
That's the easy stuff, but look at the zucchini and artichokes! Not bad, huh?
The thing with artichokes is that they are perennials, so you really have to care for the soil to ensure your harvest. Spring is the best time to plant and they make for some beautiful landscaping too. Try eating one raw! I know that sounds crazy...but this is a common way of indulging in the flower in European countries such as Italy, Greece and France. The leaves break right below the meat, and you scrape with your teeth as you would cooked. The heart, of course, is the best part - just be sure to cut out the purple thistles as you get down to the center. Once removed and rinsed, you'll have the heavenly heart of the artichoke. Now I should warn you, this plant does oxidize, so you may find that your fingers, lips and tongue have turned a slight shade of purple/black. No worries if this happens, it's perfectly natural. Just don't plan a date for that same evening. If you don't mind the added taste, you can put lemon on it and it should stop from oxidizing. I personally like the au naturel, earthy taste though.
It's such a good feeling to grow your own food, use your own compost and cut flowers for the house. Anyway look at these pictures as before shots and I'll return in a month or 2 to show you where the garden goes. I might even cook something up with my organic veggies and share a recipe or 2.

Well, here I am. Writing my very first blog! So please bear with me and I hope to be engaging enough that you'll want to hear from me again and perhaps even want to write me back and ask me questions.
I've opened stores, I've created divisions, I've pushed the limits by which my industry has set forth; and while reflecting on these great accomplishments, I think to my current... masterpiece, may you call it, and I can't help but kick my heels up and shout. There is a pride of M.Fredric that many people may not know about, and that is the MF Collection. This is my pet program, my baby, my sweat and blood (well not so much blood, but you get the point) that I've been working on for over 3 years. I've scoured the LA design market to find the best local product from small size companies at great prices. Our local LA shoppers have flipped for this private collection! The designs are fresh and cutting edge, and the price value is INSANE! Now when I say "insane", I need you to understand that most items are under $50! We're talking about clothing that's in the same league as our famous brand names that are two and three times the price!
These little gems-my collection of treasure-have one thing in common, and that is the M.Fredric "stamp of approval" of what we know to be the best of the best. Our famous brands like Hard Tail, Splendid, Twisted Heart, Hudson, J Brand Jeans, etc. are awesome and truly important fashion leaders and the bread and butter of any great boutique and/or department store. But the MF Collection is something you can't get anywhere but here. It's the alternative for all you modern day shoppers without having to sacrifice quality, flattering fit or incredible fabrics. It's what my wife calls "yummy". It's the kind of little secret that we're hoping our online shoppers will discover. Our LA customers have been lucky enough to see, feel and try it on a daily basis. And all of you out there in the world far away from LA should be able to too!
I don't mean this to be a sales pitch, because anyone can tell you my forte is not in sales. But like a proud new parent obnoxiously whipping out the kids' pictures to everyone in sight, I have to show off my baby, my collection. So I'll tell you what...I'll cover your shipping both ways and give you a full refund if you're not a believer. That's how sure I am that you'll love it once you try it. Just be sure to write back to me and let me know what you think.

We here at M.Fredric are an interesting group of people with some interesting things to say. Now "interesting" may fall anywhere in between fascinating and bazaar...but nonetheless, we are individuals with different styles and opinions. To know us, is to know our past and how it all started.
The company was founded in 1979 by The Levine family. For those of you that don't know where the name M.Fredric came from, 'M' is for Mardi Levine (now Mardi Fox) and 'Fredric' is for Fredric Levine (we call him Fred). The dynamic brother and sister duo built the company from the ground up--later joined by Fred's wife, Lisa. The trio continues to run the show to this day.
M.Fredric opened its very first store in Brentwood on April 3, 1980. Within that same year, stores in Marina del Rey and Beverly Hills opened their doors in May and July, respectively.
M.Fredric's first store:

The original M.Fredric gang:

And there's little Adam Levine drumming away on the counter...

Two years later came the store on Sepulveda. And along with that store came some pretty awesome ads. Just look at that STYLE!
As advertised in Los Angeles Magazine:
Sepulveda possibly became the most well known location due to the fact that we began our annual 'Warehouse' sale at this store. More commonly known today as our 'Dorothy Sale' - since our warehouse is now on Dorothy Dr. in Agoura Hills.
First Warehouse Sale: 1985
The line wrapped around those tracks for hours

Dorothy Sale: 2005
Not much changed over the course of 20 years...

A decade later M.Fredric had an announcement...It was EXPECTING! Yes, M.Fredric opened up its 'Kids' store. At the time they knew they needed to expand the ever growing brand; and a kids division was born.
Setting up the first M.Fredric Kids store:
Mardi and daughter Marlow (now a designer for the 1969 division of The Gap)

Over the past 30+ years, M.Fredric evolved from its roots into the better contemporary apparel boutique that it is today; boasting a wide range of stylish, trendy apparel and accessories for women, men and children. We avoid the cookie-cutter look of most retail chains. We strive for an eclectic, yet warm and welcoming ambiance. Our staff considers customer service as a way of life. They know your name, your kids' names and even where you took your last vacation - mostly because they helped you pick out the impeccable wardrobe to suit the occasion.
We've followed the trends, we've stepped outside of the box, and we've made small no-name designers well known throughout the community and nation. Our daily routine is anything but routine. We are constantly evolving. We are a family--and within the dynamic of being a family, comes chaos and harmony. Simultaneously. Over the course of the 'M.Fredric Blog', you'll get to meet some of the interesting characters that we first spoke of.
You'll meet Fred, the California attorney who was fed up with the negative and adversarial nature of the law business and took action on his desire to work among family and friends with common goals and positive energy. Go figure, he got into the retail industry. And with a schedule that allows for little to no free time, he is eager to start writing to you! The Customer. Just about anything and everything.
His wife Lisa, who when came on as a partner, was the impetus to establishing M.Fredric as a company on the cutting edge of fashion. She is the voice of reason and is sometimes the only voice that can calm Fred down or change his mind. She has a keen eye for recognizing talent and she subtlety nurtures them.
And last, but certainly not least, Mardi. Our free-spirited, bohemian yogi with an eclectic/ quirky sense of style and a personality that goes with it. She's known in the industry as having the best kids stores in all of LA and has a knack for getting 'up-and-coming' designers on the map. She also buys all the accessories for the stores and you'll get to see and hear about her trips across the world that inspired new trends right in the M.Fredric stores.
You'll get to meet a couple of others along the way as well...
So brace yourself our fellow readers. We're about to go on a journey with one another. We love all aspects of inspiration. Culture, food, art, fashion, people and everything in between. We are going to share our "finds" with you and hope to not only inspire you, but perhaps get inspiration from you as well. Let's discover together.
